HTML5 and CSS3 frameworks are becoming more and more popular every day, so in this post, we’ll examine some of the most popular CSS3 and HTML5 frameworks.

HTML5 Boilerplate

HTML5 Boilerplate is the professional badass’s base HTML/CSS/JS template for a fast, robust and future-proof site.

After more than three years in iterative development, you get the best of the best practices baked in: cross-browser normalization, performance optimizations, even optional features like cross-domain Ajax and Flash. A starter apache .htaccess config file hooks you the eff up with caching rules and preps your site to serve HTML5 video, use @font-face, and get your gzip zipple on.

Boilerplate is not a framework, nor does it prescribe any philosophy of development, it’s just got some tricks to get your project off the ground quickly and right-footed.

perkins CSS3 LESS Framework

Perkins is a HTML5/CSS3 Framework created by designers and developers to make their life a bit easier.

It has a basic HTML5 template including many of the supported tags, a set of LESS stylesheets and mixins for common tasks such as creating navigation, rounded corners, gradients and much more.

Less Framework 4

Less Framework is a CSS grid system for designing adaptive web­sites. It contains 4 layouts and 3 sets of typography presets, all based on a single grid.

G5 Framework

G5 Framework started as a personal project. In an attempt to speed up workflow, reuse the best coding practices & similar coding techniques, the framework serves as a starter file for new websites.

Being an active member of the web design community, this framework is a result of a ton of reading and research. For over a year the framework was constantly changed, simplified, and updated with current best practices. The framework is very lightweight and only includes what I believe are the essentials.

The framework is free for personal & commercial use as long as humans.txt remains unchanged & in the index head. Don’t worry, you can add your team information in there also.

52framework

The 52framework was started by the enavu network as a way to expedite the process of the usage of the latest standards in web development, and the love of the number 52. The 52framework provides an easy way to get started using html5 and css3 while still supporting all modern browsers (including ie6). 52framework is one of the most popular HTML5 and CSS3 frameworks available today. The features include rounded corners, text shadows, classic HTML5 markup, internal grid system, among many others! It’s a free community-run project with many contributors over time.

Gridless

Gridless is an optionated HTML5 and CSS3 boilerplate for making mobile first responsive, cross-browser websites with beautiful typography.

Gridless encourages and uses progressive enhancement through mobile first responsive web design.

Gridless is meant to be a starting point, which should be edited, tweaked and overwritten to suit each project’s design requirements, rather than being blindly used as a black box of non-touchiness.

Gridless was tested in the following browsers: Mozilla Firefox 3.5+ Opera 11+ Google Chrome 11+ Safari 5+ Internet Explorer 6+

Modernizr

Modernizr is an open-source JavaScript library that helps you build the next generation of HTML5 and CSS3-powered websites.

Jo HTML5 Mobile App Framework

Jo is a JavaScript framework for HTML5 capable browsers and devices. It was originally designed to work on mobile platforms as a GUI and light data layer on top of PhoneGap. Since its creation, Jo has also been tested successfully as a lightweight framework for mobile browsers, newer desktop browsers, and even Dashboard widgets.

inuit.css

inuit.css is a lightweight, constantly updated CSS framework which provides you with a pragmatic and feature-rich starting point for all your projects.

It is crammed full of useful snippets, best practices and has additional plugins to extend its usefulness further.

Inuit.css main features are fully supported even in IE6 + basic support for new HTML5 elements.

CSS3 Buttons

CSS3 Buttons is a simple framework for creating good-looking GitHub style button links.

Baseline

Built with typographic standards in mind, Baseline makes it easy to develop a website with a pleasing grid and good typography. Baseline starts with several files to reset the browser’s default behavior, build a basic typographic layout — including style for HTML forms and new HTML 5 elements — and build a simple grid system. Baseline was born to be a quick way to prototype a website and grew up to become a full typographic framework for the web using “real” baseline grid as its foundation.

CSS3 Action Framework

CSS3 Action Library aims to gather all the best CSS3 effects in one place.

Today the number of browsers who supports CSS3 is growing , CSS3 in many cases can be used like Java Script replacement and can contribute to better browsing experience.

HTML5 Framework

HTML5 Framework is just what you think it might be – a framework for creating layouts in HTML5.

The base file includes HTML5 elements and has a CSS file that styles these elements.

Authors can use the framework as a starting point for creating layouts in HTML5.

Gravity

Gravity is a SASS based framework for making powerful, easily maintainable HTML5 websites. It helps you rapidly prototype your ideas and will generally make your life much easier.

There are all kinds of useful features built in, including ready made typography presets, form styling, column sizing based on variables and much more. You will need to install SASS to run the framework but, to be honest, if you’re not already using SASS you’re really missing out.
